TL;DR

With more than 15 Million units sold, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has become the best selling fighting-game of all time in the U.S. surpassing Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Street Fighter II. Massive numbers as well as new fighters, costumes, and DLCs being sold regularly have given this Nintendo flagship some long legs to break even more records.

Market Research & Analytics company The NPD Group just released their video game sales stats ahead of The Game Awards and the November numbers are BIG. According to The NPD group, Super Smash Bros. UItimate has now dethroned 2008’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Street Fighter II to officially become the best-selling Fighting game of all time in the U.S.

Owing to high demand, kickass deals, and people being in a general festive mood, November is always a huge month for Video Game sales. And the stats proved that. Nintendo revealed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold a staggering 15.71 million copies and counting. This is the proverbial cherry on top of the perfect year cake for SSBU which just won the “Best Fighting Game” award at The Game Awards this year.

How did Super Smash Bros Ultimate get here?

Super Smash Bros Ultimate was released on December 7, 2018 but reached this record almost a full year later. This isn’t surprising for Nintendo games as they’ve historically had long legs (read; Zelda & Mario Kart series’). This is mainly because Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has had the Nintendo machine’s full support behind it with the company supporting the game after launch by releasing new characters and costumes as part of DLCs.

And Nintendo has even more fighters and DLCs planned for Super Smash Bros Ultimate rumored to be coming up as soon as the start of 2020. Right now, SSBU firmly holds second place behind highest selling game of the year Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Since Nintendo Switch (SSBU’s home console) is still the best selling gaming system of the year despite a 25% drop in hardware sales from last year, things are looking good for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the new decade starts.

To Sum it Up:
If there's one game that defines a genre and makes a console, it has to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It took a tried, tested, and popular formula and made it much better. Deserves the sales its doing and the accolades it's been getting.
